Customer Review: A uniquely fun romp in the offroad world.

Pure is an ATV racing game that emphasizes the ability to pull off tricks as much the racing itself. The goal of Pure is to build up your boost meter by performing crazy tricks during an aerial jump. The boost meter is intricately tied into the racing and trick parts of the game. You start a race with zero boost, and as a consequence, you can only pull off simple aerial maneuvers. Once you hit a couple of those tricks, you build up your boost meter and are able to pull off more and more advanced tricks (each of which require more air time to perform and land correctly). The boost can also be used as, ummmm, a boost while racing. So you need to perform tricks to go faster, and going faster lets you pull off bigger and badder tricks. This positive feedback loop has you racing and dashing at a frantic pace by the last lap.
The play control is pretty tight and pulling off tricks is relatively easy once you get the hang of "flicking" the analog stick to jump. The graphics and sound are both above average. I'd have to say, the game is nicely polished.
However, I feel there are a few shortcomings in the available options. As you race you unlock new ATV slots to build custom rides. You also unlock new parts to outfit your rig with. However, the interface that you use to build your custom ATVs with said parts could have been laid out a little better. Although there is a meter at the bottom of the screen that shows you how the bike's stats (handing, boosting, tricks, acceleration, etc) change with each piece, the numbers are absolute. Meaning, if I have engine part X already in the ATV and I highlight part Y instead, it doesn't show which categories are improved and which get worse if I chose to install part Y. You have to keep track of all the numbers in your head. And there are plenty of bike areas to customize, each with multiple possibilities once you unlock stuff. While it's doable, this screen could have been designed with some more thought.
Another minor gripe is that the developers didn't place a little map somewhere on the racing screen to let you know where you are on the track and how far people are from you. You can tilt your head to get different points of view while riding, but I prefer simple little icon maps in my racing games.
Finally, there are the multiplayer options. Playing online has been fun, enjoyable, and most importantly, pretty lag free. It's a good time. However, there is no split screen mode for local multiplayer racing. It's not necessarily a deal breaker, and it doesn't bother me too much, but it's always nice to have that option available.
Overall, even though I'm not a racing game enthusiast, I enjoy playing Pure. This racing game falls somewhere between the hardcore racing sims (Grand Turismo) and the carefree, arcadey cart racers (Mario Kart). So for most people out there, the game is at least worth a rental to see if it suits your taste.
