Video Game Reviews of Dead Space

Customer Review: Very high on my "Doom 3" scale
Summary: 5 Stars

eh, and in fact the game is "Doom 3" for Mac on a huge "Alien"-type intergalactic spaceship with a bit of "Prey" upside-down added to it, not on the planet Mars. I judge all games of this kind by "Doom 3", and I would say that "Dead Space" being closer than any other is better than most by far: graphics are terrific, complex and beautifully detailed, sound effects and background noises are almost spot on. By "almost" is meant that I sometimes miss the multitude of personalities, accents and dialects in "Doom 3". Voices are mostly US American, except for the oddball who of course is British and has a SPLENDID voice, plus the frequent public announcements in all sorts of languages. Some the usual gung-ho, but if they are often understandably panicky I certainly cannot blame them. I positively HATE that nagging bitch we meet early on: a CNN anchor-woman come again in voice, attitude and temperament. Other than that I find sound effects to be a constant immersive companion in true "Doom 3" style; "Future Sound Of London" and "Scanner/Robin Rimbaud", none of the loud rock that racing games pour onto us.

Gameplay: between checkpoints and collecting stuff, thingies pop up (or down, or in, or whatever) and I basically attend to them. The End. Quite bloodily and gorily too, and if they are still twitching I stomp them. As in "Doom 3" aliens are to be gotten rid of, that I may enjoy the scenery and sound effects in reflective admiration, solitude, peace and quiet. I stomp aliens with the best of conscience, but perhaps blood spouts rather more abundantly than I crave. And perhaps there are too many thingies and too much shooting and stomping after all: I would have liked more "Myst III Exile", with emphasis on the horror of it, and not THE horrors. By the later chapters it has dawned on me they are bad, no need to rub it in.

I'm usually not too keen on 3rd person shooters, as they tend to confuse me when the action gets confusing, but this one is pretty successful, the Hero (me!) keeping modestly to the left of screen for an almost 1st Person Shooter-like effect. Suit upgrades etc are obvious and visible, besides the main character (me, the Hero!!) being prettily detailed, a true Hero in armour and weaponry. It's odd though, with never a shotgun or chaingun in sight. Sigh ....I do so miss rattling off a belt of chaingun ammo, in the general direction of a thingy. Stomping is not quite the same thing. But now a little into Round Two I discover there's a gadget called a "pulse rifle" and it rattles along with the best of them, pretty effectively too once it is upgraded.

As with all new games the number af buttons and combinations thereof can be confusing (as the action gets confusing), and from time to time I blow up myself checking out my inventory in a hurry or simply attempting to run away. Once something is tearing at my neck, all calm and savoir-faire is gone anyway and I succumb to panic.

The Devil take Boss Fights. I often find them too difficult, and they always spoil the enjoyment when I get stuck for days and days. And the asteroid shootup: again and again and again until my arms and hands refuse to cooperate. Perhaps I really am become too old for this.

Text logs, vid logs and aud?o logs tell me what has come before, among echoes of the horrors I gradually experience myself. Pure "Doom 3": whispers, sobs, faint cries, indistinct voices. All logs are part of the environment and are to be read/listened to if you want to enjoy "Dead Space" to the full.
Sometimes I myself can decide which of two or even three possible doors I want to enter first! Never say linear. And I did discover the issue of "Heavenly Bodies" lying around, for I too am interested in astronomy, binary systems in particular.
Before the actual acquisition of the game all that blasting off limbs etc made me uncertain whether it was a game for me, and besides that my nephew is a sissy, but I'm very pleased I decided in favour of it.
Some say the game is too short. It took quite a while to get through the game - on the easy level, Thank You - and I rather fear having to do THAT over again on more demanding levels, jeeez. I opted for Round Two instead, thus keeping all hard-earned weaponry and being heroically invincible.
I won't be finishing off "Far Cry 2", "Call of Duty 3", "Fallout 3" and "Resistance 2" for a while. Yet again. First it was "Colin McRae: Dirt" interrupting daily routines, now it is "Dead Space" demanding all spare time. Oh well, the things we won't do for a bit of outworld imagery.

"Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star" will never be the same. Heh heh: and the automatic loudspeaker system ending a long monologue: ".....thank you, and we hope you will enjoy your stay", and I haven't heard a word of it coz I'm surrounded by a twitching pile of dead thingies that jumped me the moment I entered the Entrance Hall, and I'm still swivelling round ready for anything that may come. Nice touches like that make me forgiving towards Boss Fights. And I can't wait to see my nephew looking scared, the sissy.

It appears the Mad Scientist is an American actor, lol.
Graphic wizardry: corridors are filled with dust and fog, the slow movement of which helps creating the eerie 3D effect. Particularly zero-G is impressive as we float in wide open spaces, anxiuously awaiting the next horror..
The audio drone, immersive and haunting ....mmmmmmmmm, nice.
I can recommend the downloads: pretty outfits, weapons with a bang.
