Video Game Reviews of Madden NFL 08Customer Review: utterly disappointed. Summary: 2 StarsI bought Madden 07 for my PS3, and it was terrible...I bought into the EA hype machine once again this year when madden came out. I thought they may gone back and re-tooled. This game plays about as poorly as the old psone versions: controls are clunky, animations are reduntant, gameplay is unrealistic. Oh well I guess I will play NCAA which is much smoother and faster.
Customer Review: Par Overall; Sub-Par for Madden Summary: 3 StarsEntertaining, but I have high expectations for Madden and there is just too much missing here. The game play is decent on the PS3(though not as good as I would hope/expect) and overall the game is entertaining for 5-10 games or so, but I find myself getting bored. I am one that is very into the intangibles (like the franchise mode, stats, etc), and in this regard, the game is a disapointment. Having come from the 2007 PS2 version (never played the 07 PS3 version, though I hear it sucked), a lot of the "extra" features are missing; I really feel like I'm missing a large chuck of the game (like there is a menu or something I'm not finding...serious). Basically EA Sports is still building out it's football model for the PS3 (and I assume Xbox 360), because there is so much potential unused.
The graphics are obviously better (than PS2), but still no where near as smooth as they should be. Choppy at times, and there are a lot of little bugs. A lot of the outside game play animations get redundant. The commentary is TERRIBLE; and I really don't care about commentary. Some of the outside sounds (players yelling/talking) which are meant to be muffled and just add to the game experience are good. Otherwise, there is work to do here.
It seems like, given EA Sports progress rate, it will be a few years before they really are able to put out a PS3 Madden that is worthy. Not sure where the Xbox 360 is at, but looks like its getting similar reviews. I'm considering renting the PS2 version to get my fill...
Customer Review: Terribly disappointed Summary: 2 StarsThis game was a huge disappointment. First off, the radio commentary is terrible. The entire 'play by play' sounds muffled which I guess is to simulate AM radio. Who wants to hear that??? Its annoying and sounds terrible. Also, he doesn't really say anything interesting. In fact, it is so generic that the radio announcers constantly refers to your team as 'the good guys'. So, when you score a touchdown, it will say "the good guys just put up 7", or somethign like that. Its really lame. They couldn't program your actual team name into the broadcast?? Another thing that bothers me is that the game constantly sutters. It affects your play on the field as well as the picking of your plays. It can be quite a tedious process. There are quite a few new features that have been added to this game, but its really nothing that special. If getting through an actual game is such a mundane process, it really cancels out the benefit of these new features. I refer to these new features as 'fluff'. I definately don't recommend this game. Whats strange is that I really like NCAA 08. Its made by the same company right? I'm not sure how the quality of these two games can be so drastically different.
Customer Review: Very dissapointing Summary: 2 StarsI haven't played the Madden series in a couple of years, and I have to admit when I fired it up for the Playstation 3 I kind of wish it had stayed that way. I found the interface to be clunky, the on-screen graphics to be too busy (with the specific player info under the star players to be annoying), and overall I felt the gameplay was very sluggish and choppy.
I've always been, historically, a Madden guy (and a Playstation guy, even though the idea of getting a 360 keeps rattling around in my head). Before Madden came out, I was playing 2K's All Pro Football game to get my football fix, and I have to say that in a head-to-head gameplay comparison, 2K blows Madden out of the water. Additionally, the graphics are far superior and the game seems to be a lot more fluid and smooth. Why is this? If the guys at 2K can get the programming for the PS3 down to scratch the surface of its graphics engine, are you telling me that the boys at EA aren't up to speed? I find that hard to believe.
I can't get over how unhappy I am with Madden in comparison. I was never a fan of the 2K series when they had the NFL license on the Playstation 2, and to have to sit here an admit that they made a better game than EA did is disheartening. The reason I'm bummed by that is because I love the NFL, and if this is the best they can do for the PS3 (and maybe they really are saving their best on this game for the 360), then I'm going to have to be stuck playing my old copy of Madden 06 to get my NFL itch scratched.
Poor effort, EA, all around. Since you are holding the NFL license hostage, the least you can do is treat it well and put your best foot forward. This latest PS3 effort is just flat out weak.
Customer Review: I can't find ANYTHING that I like about this game Summary: 1 StarsThe only thing I found good about this game is the player videos for the HOF players. As far as the game itself there is...well...nothing. I will definitely be offloading the PS3 edition and giving the PS2 edition a try (I understand it's more like madden 07). Everything that was added over the years to make the game better has been stripped down and left out. All of the change for the sake of change sucks. For such a high tech machine every aspect of this game is SLOW and jerky...not just the game play itself. I got the PS3 just for this game...what a disappointment.
