Video Game Reviews of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11Customer Review: At This Price Livable Summary: 3 Stars
Pro's: (1) Current reduced price
(2) Best golf simulation on the market(Bigger developmental budget than Pro-Stroke)
(3) Avatar creation engine still top notch(different look than TW 2010 but still good)
(4) 16 golf courses(TW 2010/2011 has 16 plus the random/custom course feature)
(5) Online play for added variety: Tired of your offline tournament course than go online and play another course and earn XP.
(6) Move implementation flawed but fun if super casual.[Bottom of set camera placement/ clear view to the controller and make sure to do the update]
(7) Skills challenge mode(48 of them for a quick XP earning boost. This mode was better in TW 2010.)
(8) Decent announcing(man/woman team/Van Pelt/Tighlman same as last year with the same comments)
(9) Club tuning for optimal scores (Increase/decrease loft/power-makes power boosted 350 yd drives possible in calm winds with expert level club -also a TW 2010 feature but not as good as 2011.)
(10) Pre tournament practice on exact same course and green/fairway conditions(makes consistent 'pinball golf scores possible with good note taking-also a feature in 2010)
(11) Focus meter for additional strategy and unprecedented score control(unless you're on tour pro difficulty- you can putt preview more than once which greatly increases your chances of golfing a perfect score.)
(14) Ryder Cup although not perfect, provides another way to experience the game with shorter versions of the same golf courses.
Cons: (1) Boring because nothing other than a straight golfing simulation. I would love to see a 'Sims-like' integration of this game. Golf as a video game needs this badly in my opinion !
(2) Choppier than it's predecessor/some greens unreadable (avatar's lurching/golf balls stuttering into holes. When zooming ahead on many long sunny day putts, it is impossible to see the break lines.)
(3) No incentive to play higher difficulties (a birdie on tour pro should be worth 50 xp if a birdie on amateur is worth 25 xp. Problem with 2010 as well.)
(4) Can't set offline competition level(ditto for 2010 supposedly corrected in 2012-a small gripe.)
(5) No in round saves (ditto for 2010 supposedly corrected in 2012-MLB The Show had this feature 4 years ago.)
(6) When you compare the pro avatars to MLB The Show's quality you see a marked negative difference.
(7) Sound effects worse than last year(no swats but pings and audience one brain oohs.)
(8) Have to buy extra courses and pro shop items to compete online and/or be competitive.
(9) Move implementation could've been better(now acknowledged by Tiburon)
(10) You don't earn as much XP for Ryder Cup play, zero for 'Play Now', none for Gamernet play although XP seemingly accumulates in that online mode and none for winning tournaments. You do get XP for completing rounds in live tournaments but not quite as much as for offline tournaments.
(11) True aim is not all that great for me. It just adds more prep time (and squinting) to an already slow game.
(12) Icons burn into plasma televisions (2010 & 2011). They are there on both of my plasmas(lower left and right) but you have to be very close to the sets to see them. The swing and distance icons could migrate for plasma set owners. This is common in video games so more informing than negative.
(13) Created avatars don't speak like in 2010/ bought positive celebrations hardly play and when they do not in close up. The no voice thing is a bug that should have been corrected before release.
(14) Online and Ryder Cup courses are significantly shorter than the exact same offline tournament courses. I don't understand why Tiburon did this. Could be a pro or con depending on your viewpoint.
(15) Graphics: When compared to the graphics of MLB The Show 2010 the graphics of TW 2011 are not as good to me because of increased jitter. I think TW 2010 has less jitter and therefore better graphics than 2011.
(16) As useful as club tuner is it could be even more useful if you could change elevations and control the wind speed and direction in the practice tunnel. Also get rid of the splotches of white grass paint that make it harder to see precise yardages when in those areas. This feature is much better on 11 than 10 however.
(17) Got some bugs: wrong club/wrong shot suggestions pretty common(SW pitch in wrong direction when it should have been a 6 iron for ie.). My created avatars' clothes change without authorization from me on a regular basis and it isn't just for Ryder Cup. The game is allowing me to repeatedly do pre tournament practice rounds at Wentworth. That bug works in my favor. You can only choose from 4 players for your opposition for The Ryder Cup.
TW 2010 was a solid golf simulator with great looking created avatars and numerous positive celebrations playing in close up however the game ludicrously tried to force training/attribute deductions/narrow playing style on you if you wanted to take advantage of your full wardrobe. TW 2011 corrected that and gave you maximum control over your game to the point where you are able to consistently golf ace scores(check out the online leaderboards) however this game had some bugs and problems of it's own. As far as the new game out March 29th, the prudent thing to do would be to wait 2-3 weeks after release so that a few honest reviews trickle out from people who have traded their copies in. I think it's highly unlikely to see unbiased reviews of that game prior to that. Personally I did not care for the demo(too much squinting to read the caddie options among other annoyances). I think it has a much better career mode than either 10 or 11 however which to me would be a selling point.
My personal preference between 11 and 10 is 10. Even though I was averaging 20 under par and frequently better on 11 I've stopped playing that version due to total boredom with the game. I still play 10 ocassionally on the bedroom set because it's a happier game. When my pretty female created avatar gets a birdie or eagle she's hopping all over the place and it really cracks me up ! Also I like tournament challenge #3 at Pebble Beach and the very last one where you're in a 3 way 18 hole shoot out with Tiger and Rocco Mediate. Both of these challenges are pretty hard and rewarding to beat. There's nothing on 2011 that compares to this.
