Video Game Reviews of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Customer Review: One of the best!
Summary: 5 Stars

This game is no question one of the best that I have ever played. I was somewhat skeptical (since all of the previous MGS's were also good), but this one is the best so far. Beautiful game as well. Man, what an awesome job they did with this being their first on the PS3!! Revised control scheme is a God send as well!

Customer Review: ***** EPIC HAS A NEW STANDARD!!!*****
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not able to put into words the sheer perfection that is this game. I have played this game completely through about 7 times and I am sure each time that I will never play a game this epic for many years to come! The story is one that you must experience uninterrupted to fully enjoy the passion that the team has obviously poured all over this piece of art. I have never sat back in my seat at the end of a game and actually feel like I have finally finished a truly epic adventure just as I wish there was more but fully understand that it was suppose to end this way.....and what a ending it is.

There are plenty of very good in depth reviews here. I just feel the need to expresses my gratitude and try to tell others that this is a story to behold.

Customer Review: Another enjoyable entry into the MGS series
Summary: 5 Stars

Metal Gear Solid 4 was probably the most high profile game released for the Playstation 3 during the initial launch of the console. Even if you had never played any of the previous Metal Gear Solid games, you almost certainly had heard of them. In many respects, the MGS series is sui generis; its mix of combat and stealth gameplay was revolutionary when the first MGS was released, and its over the top storylines and legendarily long cutscenes are as well-known if not even more well-known than the gameplay. Metal Gear Solid 4 follows in the tradition of the previous three games, with refinements in the gameplay to make the game more enjoyable.

You can rest assured that the crazy plot twists and long cutscenes are still present in Metal Gear Solid 4. As a matter of fact, MGS4 does a fine job of trying to unify the stories the previous three games - and to say anything more would risk spoiling the rather well-written plot. The cutscenes are gorgeously rendered by the Playstation 3, and can actually be skipped. This game has notably fewer codec scenes than the previous three games, despite the fact that the animation during codec conversations is better than it has ever been. I should probably note that the story won't make a lot of sense without having played the previous three games, and it is a good idea to play those three before MGS4 if you haven't yet.

The gameplay of MGS4 represents a rather substantial departure from the previous three games. Combat is now mostly done in an over-the-shoulder view, and there is now complete flexibility in the angle at which you can set the camera. While it may take some time for veteran MGS players to get used to the new controls, once you do get used to them they are probably better than the control schemes of any of the previous games. There is also considerable customization in the weaponry you can use, and as always has been the case in MGS games, there are usually multiple ways of fighting enemies and progressing through the game.

Metal Gear Solid games have never been particularly long, and this game is no exception. A first time playthrough, in which you watch all the cutscenes, will probably take sometime between 15 and 25 hours, depending on your skill level. Fortunately, the story is quite interesting, and the gameplay is superb. It's clear that the designers spent a lot of effort in polishing the combat in the game. There is a good mix of sneaking, combat on foot, and combat on vehicles, and the boss fights are reasonably challenging and quite interesting. There's also considerable motivation to play through the game multiple times, since you can experiment with different ways of beating the bosses and will have access to new items in repeat playthroughs.

If you have access to the Internet, it is possible to download an "MGS4 encyclopedia", which contains entries on key events, characters, locations, and more, for all the Metal Gear games (not just the MGS series, but also the Metal Gear games and the games on handhelds). The lore in the Metal Gear series is so immense that this application does a good job of refreshing your memory about the previous games and organizing all that information in one place. While there is protection against MGS4 spoilers (you can't read entries on MGS4 unless there is a cleared file of the game on your PS3 hard drive), there is no such protection against spoilers for any of the other games.

Overall, MGS4 is a fantastic game on the PS3, and has deserved the many accolades it has already received. With the price of the game being not much more than many Blu-Ray movies out there, this is a great deal and if you own a PS3 but don't own this game yet, you should buy it!

Customer Review: Greatest Video Game Experience in my ENTIRE life!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been playing games ever since i was about 13 years old. I'm a female video gamer and i'm almost 23 now, but i've never ran into a game like THIS. Yes i've played the other metal gears, but nothing like this!!! I dont even know where to begin.

To start off with the Graphics in this game, its fantastic, its almost as if youre watching a movie. everything is perfect and neat, even movements of their mouths in coversations. everything just about looks as real as it can get.

The Bosses are just like your normal Metal Gear bosses like Raven, Mantis, Sniper Wolf, Fortune, Vamp, The End, The Fear etc... Only this time you'll get a blast out of these new bosses. I must admit, the bosses were challenging. like for example, when i fought Laughing Octopus, i was having a hard time finding her, but i was also like "crap, this is a good boss fight!!" and when i fought Crying Wolf I spend most of most of my time hiding under the truck becuase i was getting a bit freaked out, but it was fun as heck!!!!!!!!!!

The cutscenes are a bit longer then the past metal gears, there's ALOT of explaining and you have to pay attention and try not to doze off. I did not understand everything they said, but there were times where i wish they had'nt exaggerated some points in the game. but the majority of the cutscenes were actually pretty good

Metal gear fans get to do ALOT more in this game then you could in other Metal Gears. one of the first events i enjoyed doing was trying to find Naomi's footprints, then afterwards being chased by the GECKOs while Snake had protect the tank from being attacked, i loved being on the bike with old Eva and seeing slow-motion scenes. and *******Spoilers, i enjoyed that they brought Snake back to shadow moses. It brought back memories, i enjoyed that mission more than anything in this MG4 plus getting to ride the very thing that tried to Kill snake, the Rex. *********

Thats another thing thats awesome about this game, you'll have reappearing characters. bascially MG4 will answer all the remaining questions you have.

In this Metal Gear you can buy weapons, or more like buy the license for it. when you pick up stuff or depending how youre doing in battle, you get points for it. so yea, now you have a little shop

The ending is the richest I've ever seen. I've never seen a game that had an ending that was almost an hour long.

*~Bad Parts about the game *~

The only bad part about the game is that they did mix up the controls a bit, but its pretty tolerant. I was still use to "O" being the confirm button but they changed it to "X"

I didnt like the new Codec actually. I do give points up for the amazing movements of the characters on the screen, but i actually prefer the old fashion codec.

If you've been a metal gear fan for a long time, Please i suggest you buy the last part of the story. i loved it ALOT!
