Video Game Reviews of Mortal Kombat vs. DC UniverseCustomer Review: Mortal Kombat has never looked so good... Summary: 4 StarsI grew up with Mortal Kombat, so when I recently bought a PS3 after over a decade without owning a gaming system, I knew I had to pick this game up. Suffice it to say, I was blown away by the graphics; I know things have changed since my Super NES days, but the graphics here are amazing period. You can see the tears in the suits, feel the concussion of the blows. I would've preferred a little more blood, but it looks pretty violent without it.
You can play the old fashion ways, in a one-player arcade mode, or two-player combat with a friend. However, there's also a story mode that you can play from either the Mortal Kombat or the DC side. The story itself is, well, the stuff bad comics are made out of; it's interesting, but not really believable, even in the realm of video games/comics. The Mortal Kombat guys vs. Superman? Much as I love Raiden and Scorpion, the Man of Steel's got this one covered with his eyes closed. Still, the scenes play out nicely, and most of the voice cast does a solid job. And anyways, this is a fighting game, not a story-driven game; it's pretty interesting to see these groups of characters go up against each other.
There are a few flaws here, as there are with all fighting games. The controls are often slow to respond; and the computer has far more control over its fighter than you do over yours. The computer can block where you can't, and can perform endless series of combos, and can even inflict damage on you when you're in Rage Mode (it's pretty difficult for you to hurt the computer when the computer is in Rage Mode). Even the Rage feature is kind of contrived; it comes in handy when you're getting your butt kicked, but overall, it's unnecessary. We play Mortal Kombat to beat the crap out of tough-looking S.O.B.s, and by God, we get that here. MORTAL KOMBAT vs. DC UNIVERSE isn't a perfect game, God knows; and it's probably a bit dated compared to a lot of what's out there. But I dare you to find a game series as stress-relieving as Mortal Kombat. And this is, by far, the best-looking, hardest-hitting Mortal Kombat game yet.

View larger. | Story The story of how the heroes and villains of Mortal Kombat and the DC universe could find themselves not only existing on the same plain, but battling each other revolves around coincidental victories in the respective realms by Raiden and Superman. In Raiden's case it was a victory over Shao Kahn, while Superman bested Darkseid. These occurred at the exact same time and involved inter-dimensional elements, which somehow merged their two enemies into one being, Dark Kahn, while allowing the characters of the two universes to interact. In this merging the powers of the heroes and villains are scrambled as well, making some stronger than they ever were, and leaving others vulnerable for the first time in their lives, allowing each to battle on more or less equal footing. And battle they do without realizing that the uncontrollable rage that they feel for each other is actually the work of Dark Khan. Gameplay Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe being a fighter, gameplay consists of one-on-one battles, both in local play and online, in which players can choose a character from either side who will face off against a counterpart from the other. Each character has unique attacks and special finishing moves, and fighting arenas vary depending on whether your character comes from the Mortal Kombat or DC universe. Keeping with the reputation for brutality in the Mortal Kombat franchise, characters from this side will have access to fatalities, while the historically less overly violent DC characters will execute "heroic brutalities," which are end moves where the opponent while beaten, is not killed. The game also features new gameplay mechanics such as: Freefall Kombat, in which players can engage in extended combat while in midair; Klose Kombat, during which the play angle moves to a close-up view of the action; The Test Your Might mini-game where you smash your opponent through walls; and Rage Mode, which increases the power of a character's attack by 50% and provides protection against being stunned by an opponent.
