Video Game Reviews of Splatterhouse

Customer Review: Old-School Mentality Meets New-School Capabilities
Summary: 5 Stars

It's quite a joy when a new game bleeds originality. But often times, it's more joyous when the game does so literally.
"Splatterhouse", a reboot of the classic arcade franchise from back in the day, does just that, and then some. Getting
it for Christmas, I was unfortunately late to the party in reviewing this, but let's jump right into it, shall we?

Story: A-

Rick and his inexplicably beautiful girlfriend, Jennifer, wander into a somewhat unhinged professor's house as part of a
class assignment for their college. Upon arriving there, Rick starts hatching a plan to propose to Jen, but alas, it is
hatched too late, because as they discover a number of creepy experiments in the mansion, monsters burst forth and
murder Rick as the doctor kidnaps Jen for some sick, nefarious purpose. But this is only the beginning, after all,
and as he bleeds out, Rick finds a talking mask that tells him to put it on if he wants to save his love. He does so,
and proceeds to morph into a grotesquely muscular version of himself capable of ripping monsters apart with his bare
hands. From there, Rick sets out on a multi-dimensional trek to kick ass, kill the doc, and save Jennifer. It's
a modification of the old story, but with some nice comedic twists thrown in to keep things interesting.

Gameplay: A+

Do you like killing things? Do you like doing so in the most vicious, unrealistic ways possible? Do you like getting your
arm sliced off, only to pick it up and pound enemies with it? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then
"Splatterhouse" is for you! All jokes aside, though, there're almost no flaws in the gameplay department. Rick controls
perfectly, being surprisingly quick and agile when it comes to almost every aspect of his move set (running, jumping,
fighting, disemboweling, decapitating, etc.), and the action never gets old as new weapons and a smorgasbord of upgrades
become available. Throw in side-scrolling levels that are a tongue and cheek homage to the older entries in the
franchise, and you have a varied package that doesn't let up on the action until the credits roll

Graphics: A

Part cel-shaded, part fully-rendered 3D, these are some of the best graphics out there, especially for this type of game.
However, and this is unavoidable to bring up when discussing this game... "Splatterhouse" is heinous. It makes "Manhunt"
look like an entry in the Mario series. Every bone, vital organ and ounce of blood in your enemies is on full display here,
as well as a plethora of other bits of meat, bone and guts scattered (splattered?) about every surface of every level.
I'm not one to dissuade kids from playing violent games because I'm young enough to remember what a drag that is, but this
is actually one of the rare games that I would fairly say no person under the age of 16 or 17 should be playing or seeing,
especially considering the fact that that the obligatory hidden collectibles in each level are nude pics of Jennifer. These
are phenomenal graphics, but ones that should not be seen by kids' eyes.

Sound: A+

Blasting metal and renditions of music from the old games accompany beautifully juicy splats of blood and the sounds of flesh
tearing into chunks. This is all good and well, but it all pales in comparison to what may this game's strongest suit: the voice
acting. Jim Cummings is the highlight, being hilariously cruel and vulgar as the Terror Mask, always breaking the fourth wall
and throwing tongue-in-cheek references to the old games at the audience, while simultaneously forming a kind of
fractured friendship with Rick. Rick, voiced by Josh Keaton (arguably best known as Ocelot from Metal Gear Solid 3), is
convincingly wuss-tastic at first, but as the game progresses, he grows noticeably more hostile and violent. Everybody here
is in top form, and obviously having fun with the ludicrous content they've been given, which makes the whole experience
that much more fun for the player.

Overall: A+

Only 3 to 4 times a year (6 to 7 if I'm lucky) does a game fill me with genuine joy. "Splatterhouse", arriving almost at the end
of the year for me, delivers that joy in copious amounts. Buckets of blood, perfect gameplay, excellent soundscapes, devious
level design, fantastic graphics... the list goes on. But it should be sufficient to say that, if you're of age, and not
squeamish, this game without a doubt belongs on your shelf. This is one of the best games I've played this year, and I can
almost promise you that it will be for you, too.

Note: Another excellent deal is the fact that all three original "Splatterhouse" games are unlockable bonuses on the disc, which
are all worth playing. Also, another common gripe about this game that I didn't address was the difficulty. YES, it's hard. NO,
that doesn't give you a right to complain about it. Games aren't supposed to be easy unless they're specifically geared towards
children, and plus, this game isn't any NEAR as hard as other games on the market. And even if it IS hard for you, every
second of it is fun, and doesn't more time playing it mean that you're getting your money's worth? Yes, it does. Now go buy it.
