Video Game Reviews of Valkyria Chronicles

Customer Review: A Quite Solid RPG
Summary: 5 Stars

This game is what you would want from an RPG: something not too hard to learn to play with a story line you care about. Yes, we all know war stories are done to death. And yes, we all know war stories from the 1930s era are DEFINITELY done to death! However, this one has a bit of mystery and excitement to it once you encounter one of the namesakes of the game. The game controls and maps are easy to get the hang of, which frees up your brain for actual combat strategy. You also have a multitude of persons to choose from to make your elite squad. Each has it's own personality with strengths and weaknesses, and you'll figure out which you do and don't want to deal with REAL quick!!! To top it off, you actually end up CARING about your squad members, which adds to a wonderfully rich experience.

Overall, largely underrated game that I give two thumbs up. I'm on my way now to play it all over again with my clear game data!

Customer Review: Underrated
Summary: 4 Stars

One of the most underrated games for the ps3 in my opinion. A very interesting take on turn-based RPGs. Great visual style. Only reason I dont give it 5 stars: story is kind of slow and at times it has boring filler story but u can skip it. That flaw does not take away from gameplay though, which is top notch.

Customer Review: Broke my streak of unfinished games
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not really in the mood to write a long review, suffice to say Valkyria Chronicles is the best game I've played in a while, I'd recommend it to any one even if you don't think you're going to like it(I didn't think I was going to), and that I'll probably write a longer review later. By the way you can use R2 instead of going into another menu while in book mode.

Customer Review: A-Ok
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered it. It gave me me a certain amount of days before it arrives at my home.

On the estimated day, it arrives.

The game box and the CD itself were in perfect quality, and I have played through the game with no errors.

You can trust these guys.

Customer Review: One of the best games for the PS3
Summary: 5 Stars

I've played a dozen or so games on the PS3 and I'm not one of those people who has to own every game. I find a game that I like and I usually finish it and then I move on to the next. That said, I had never heard of this game but I was impressed with the number of positive reviews so I took a chance and bought it. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised. This is a great strategy game with one of the best interfaces that I've seen. The rules are simple but the way that they are implemented leads to infinite variety and a lot of fun. One reviewer said that this game is like chess and I would agree.

Basically there are six classes, each with their own specialty...scouts, infantry, engineers, snipers, tanks, and anti-tanks. What I like is the flexibility of the classes. For example, engineers are primarily used to repair tanks and replenish weapons but they can also attack if necessary and do reasonable damage, anti-tank units can attack any target, etc. In addition, as you gain experience and money, you can upgrade classes and equipment. There is a nice balance here that you never have enough to upgrade everything so you need to choose carefully.

Then there is the interface itself...each battle starts in an overhead command mode that shows the terrain, location of units, visible enemy units, etc. Command points are allocated for each turn and you move units based on these points. When a unit is selected, you take control of it in a 3D first person environment, which is very well done. The graphics are anime-like and quite attractive with a nice sense of style. One point of note is that there is no life-like violence, blood, profanity, etc. This is a family oriented game that can be enjoyed by everyone. I like realistic violence as much as anyone and I did not miss it here at all. In fact, it would have seemed out of place.

If this were all there was to the game, it would be good but not great. But this game goes above and beyond. There must be literally hours of dialog that tells an interesting story as the game progresses and I mean much more dialog than I've heard before, enough to make a movie and then some. Character development is enough to really add emotional content. My only minor complaint is that the dialog can be a bit corny in places...for example, the Largo vegetable stuff, which seems aimed at young children. In addition, the music is good with what must be 30 different songs playing at various times. Sound effects are great, in-game comments are funny. Each member of your squad has dialog and some of it is very funny. Jann the gay Lancer is my favorite. For example, each character has special abilities that are triggered by environmental events. When Jann is around a group of men, he might say, "Wow, look at all the muscles" or just breath heavily.

Interestingly, I found that the reviewers who left negative comments were mostly off base. A few complained that the game was too linear and I disagree. With the exception of two (out of at least 30) battles, each has an infinite number of solutions depending on your style of play. Personally, I like to get the "A" rating and this requires completing the battle in as few turns as possible but you could easily take your time and play defensively, wiping all enemy units off the map. Sometimes it is difficult to figure out how to do this but I was successful every time, after I learned the rules. Another reviewer complained that battles had to be completed as the designers intended. This is also not true. For example, I never developed or used the sniper class at all, which I'm sure goes contrary to what the developers intended. Furthermore, after I finished the game, I went online to see how others completed the levels and their strategy was always quite different than mine. A few others complained about the lack of realism and yes, grenades don't detonate mines, enemy units don't turn around when a tank blows up right behind them, etc, but this is ridiculous. No game perfectly reflects reality and if it did, it would probably be boring. What is important is knowing the rules to the game and developing strategy based on those rules. Finally, there are folks that commonly complain about missing features such as the lack of online or multiplayer modes. I also find this absurd because the game says one player only. The real question should be, does the game perform as advertised, and the answer here is a resounding "Yes". Enjoy the game for what it is and not what it could be. Personally, this is my favorite PS3 game with the exception of Ratchet & Clank, which is also remarkably well done. Both of these games are probably a bit easy for the hard-core gamer but nevertheless very enjoyable.
