I have 3 PS3 controllers - the black one that came with the system, this blue one and a white one. Regardless of color, they all work the same - at an excellent level.
As for the price, I don't believe that $55-$60 retail is worth it. But Amazon typically has these controllers for between $39-$44, which I believe to be a more proper price point for such a solid controller with great technology that is responsive and well-made.
The controller automatically configures itself to work with your PS3. By comparison, the Xbox 360 requires you to hit a button on the system and controller at the same time to sync up. I have both systems and don't mind the Xbox 360 controller setup, but it's just easier for the PS3.
I would recommend this product over a third party controller or cheap knock-off controller. First, because a firmware update blocked the knock-offs on the PS3. Second, reviews show that responsiveness and performance is not as good on the other controllers. Third, the cost difference between the knock-offs and genuines can be as little as $10. I am all for saving money, but do yourself a favor and just get the official controller unless you have kids who don't treat controllers with a reasonable level of care. If that is the case, then I would submit that they shouldn't be using a $300-$400 game system and holding a $45 controller until they can do so. But having 4 kids, I digress...
Just spend the extra $10 here at Amazon when the controllers hit $40 and avoid the potential frustration shown in reviews of the third party controllers and AVOID cheap knock-offs from China.
Oh, and a bonus for you parents: In the unlikely event that your controller ever dies or breaks, it would make a sweet boomerang or fetch toy for your dog. Or a blunt object to hit boys with who court your teenage daughter. That's how solidly these things are built. EXTRA VALUE!
