Video Game Reviews of Heavenly Sword

Customer Review: Short and sweet!
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't play video games that often but I do own a PS3. Let me tell you this game is just spectacular! It's like being in a movie, and you get to play the lead! The graphics, the storyline, the martial arts moves, the musical score, and the gameplay are just stunning. It's my favorite game of all time. I'm crazy about Nariko now! =)

Customer Review: Uneven
Summary: 3 Stars

I played the Japanese version of this, but except for the menus, I assume it's identical to the American version, including the excellent English voice acting. That, along with the gorgeous visuals and the very cool special moves, are the good parts of the game. Unfortunately, the game is stuffed chock-full with frustration.

First of all, it's a button-masher--you will find yourself wondering over and over, "Why do I have to press the X button a thousand times when I could have just pressed it once to open that gate?" or "What is the point of having a little Dance Dance Revolution pattern minigame that does nothing but undercut what would otherwise be a terrific dramatic moment?" A game ought to suck you in with the fun, not exhaust you mentally and physically for no good reason, leaving you with a throbbing thumb and forearm, and a simmering sense of frustration.

Speaking of which, the puzzles are, with a few exceptions, just bad. A couple of them are fun, but they are all dumb-as-a-rock simple, and yet often frustrating due to poor button-mashing choices on the part of the game designers. I often wondered why they even bothered with a puzzle at that particular place in the game. All it did was slow things down and annoy the player.

Story-wise, there are some great moments, and some really awful ones where I would just go "Oh, come ON!" I don't mean awful in a good way--I'm all for tragic drama in a game--I mean awful as in making you feel cheated, or awful as in stupid.

Characters are largely interesting, and I positively loved Nariko and Kai at times--Nariko's facial expressions can send a chill right through you when she's angry, and Kai makes you want to cuddle and protect her, even though she's a total psycho. But with every major character, there are moments when they do something that rings false just to advance the script. And there are of course the dumb fan-service moments that seem so common in Japanese games.

So I would recommend this game only if you have a high tolerance for frustration--if so, it's worth enduring for the many good parts.

Customer Review: So far, intersting

Excellent deep Story
Its a Female hoo-haa
changing betwen characters is excellent
excellent graphics (DMC4 better)
shooting arrows and canons best ever seen
Compat style is good with alot of varities, but some needs to be change ( how the hell to do some combos by shaking the sixaxis)

Lack of jumping
some missions are very short
somtimes alot of animes which thay are stupid
I think the game should be done using GOD of WAR Engine, or DMC, it will receive better reveiws...

Customer Review: Great Game!
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely love this game. I finished it last night and then instantly started playing it again. It has chapter points that break up the long boards, and gives you the ability to start from any chapter after it has been beaten. The characters and the story line are both wonderful and the graphics are simply amazing. The only point that is annoying is the sixaxis slow motion control that is very hard to use. You get used to it and it's not used all that much, but it takes away a little from the fun. The game is certainly a button smasher, but a very satisfying one. I very highly recommend this game.

Customer Review: ENJOY IT FOR WHAT IT IS.

I can't believe all the negativity about the length and gameplay. This is a kick butt action game with all the variety and story you would ever need in an action game. The voice acting and animation is down right the best I've ever seen in any video game in my life!! The personality that came from all the characters, especially King Bohon, was unbelievably cinematic. Honestly, in action games I'll usually play through them, have loads of fun, and love the game, but if someone asks me what it was about, I have no clue. I just chop, slice, dice, shoot, and destroy whatever they throw at me. This game was different. I was so into the story that I felt actual emotion when certain things happen. I won't ruin any surprises but there's one part towards the end where a villian does something that I genuinely felt pissed off about and wanted revenge. (Those of you who have played it know what I'm talking about) My girl usually hates watching me play games and she got into this game like she would a movie. She saw that part and started cursing and cheered me on to kill that SOB. This is truly that game they talk about where you feel like you're playing a movie. There are a ton of combos for you to learn but you don't have to if you don't want to. It's up to you. There's plenty of variety in game play too. Along with hacking and slashing, there are rocket launcher parts, crossbow sniping parts, button seqence parts, problem solving, and extremely fun boss fights. This is one of the coolest games I've played to date. It's been out a while so I'm sure you can find it used for cheaper too. I did. After playing it though, I would gladdly pay full price for this game if I had to.
