Video Game Reviews of MLB '09Customer Review: A little too realistic... Summary: 4 StarsIf you're looking for an escape in the video game world to live vicariously and score lots of runs, putting up great numbers, don't buy this game. It is VERY realistic, and the graphics are phenomenal. But even though it has more "classic" controls which are easier and a little less intricate, it's hard to have a ton of fun unless you are a serious gamer who is going to dive face first into this title with HOURS of gameplay. All the options are great, it's just a frustrating game to play if all you're looking for is a fun baseball game.
Customer Review: Best Baseball game to date! Summary: 5 StarsI'm going to use a few classic quotes from " A League of their own" here and start off with... "THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!" or Baseball game reviews! For those saying this game is to hard should just go play THE BIGS or something easy for little kids. MLB 09: The Show is the most authentic Baseball game on the market to date PERIOD! I'd buy a PS3 to play this game if I didn't already own one.
And many say It's to hard to hit? No kidding.... Hitting a baseball is probably the most humbling and hardest thing in Sports. Jimmy(Tom Hanks) Dugan- "It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Bottom line here is if you love MLB and the challenge baseball can bring... this game is the hottest Baseball game ever made bar none. Plays great... good AI... and sharp Graphics and sound. This is how you polish a good game engine for it's sequel. If there is one thing Sony needs to keep improving on... it's the online portion of the game. It's better.. but there's still cases of LAG online during games. Otherwise this game gets it done in so many ways it's incredible. The Show 09 and NHL 09 are hands down the 2 best sports games on the market.
Customer Review: DO NOT BUY Summary: 1 StarsGreat graphics....and thats it... WAY WAY too hard to hit. Not fun at all. Even they know it since they now have a commercial about see if you can get a hit? Lets see [...] bucks to maybe get a few hits and get killed in every game VS the computer? NO THANKS
Customer Review: Amazing game! Don't listen to those that don't want to work Summary: 5 StarsThis game is absolutely amazing. I bought it on a recommendation from my brother and never turned back! I would caution anyone looking to buy the game to not listen to those that say this game is "impossible" or "ridiculously hard." These days too many people want a "quick fix" they want everything to be "easy" because they shouldn't have to work at anything anymore.
This game will take work! I've played this game for hours upon hours and I royally got my butt handed to me in the beginning. Now I'm much better at the game, but it took time .. Very very few people will be able to put the game in and start winning by 10 runs... I just recently got to the point where I'm hitting 2-3 homeruns a game and having scores between 5-9 runs...
To mirror what others have been saying about the gameplay and online. Online is insanely laggy. I have a 10MB download line and it's insanely choppy, slow and just impossible to play.
Some of the game intricacies make the game a little more difficult then needed, the baserunning takes a lot to get used to and still makes me lose games. The pitching is extremely dynamic, it's not "pre-determined" like others have said. I have one pitcher that's 20-0 with 195 strikeouts and another that gets absolutely pounded every single game no matter the batter.
This game does take some "advanced" gaming skill - but once you're there its totally worth it!
Customer Review: Just fix that baserunning system and you've got a perfect game. Summary: 4 StarsOK, so this is the third year in a row I've reviewed the MLB The Show series, and I gotta say, I think they may have finally hit the nail on the head.
Gameplay is *astounding*, and I don't usually use the asterisks that often. There is so much more control now over the players that it truly feels like I'm playing a real game of baseball. The pitching and hitting are still relatively the same from last year, though I do like the modified "swing through the zone" feature by using the left analog stick. It was about time they did that instead of using the right one. This is also the first year I've stopped using the strike zone while hitting, so it's much more challenging and realistic.
I love - LOVE - customizing batter walk up music and editing it in the jukebox. This is totally awesome, 100%. I guess it was only a matter of time before it was possible, but the detail and ease of use is impressive.
The 40-man roster is a long overdue addition that seems totally overlooked by every other baseball game of the past. However, they made roster moves more difficult to manage because there is no way to get the list of 40 players on that roster without going into every single player and seeing the option of moving them off the roster. Why can't there just be one screen with highlights or asterisks to detail who's on the 40-man roster and who isn't. Moving players between AA, AAA and MLB took a hit when they added the 40-man roster. What was wrong with the old system?
Overall, though, the game is damn impressive. Definitely the best since MVP 05.
OK, now for my nitpicks. What's the deal with the coaches? I put a bunch of players on training assignments when they hit cold streaks but that made them even worse. Being unable to fire coaches mid-season is a drag, especially if your players really need batting/pitching training to get out of slumps and your coaches have negative effects on their stats. I don't get the purpose of the "training assignments" function. It's a good idea, but totally useless in execution especially since you cannot fire your coaches during the season. Am I missing something, or does it seem like the coaches effect on your players is effected by how well your players play, thereby making the coaches completely irrelevant?
Baserunning, as always, is still tougher to figure out than Quantum Physics. I don't understand how difficult it is to just program the directional pad to use when base running or stealing. Back in the days of MVP 05 if you wanted your base runner to steal 2nd, you simply had to press the up directional button and time it before the pitch was thrown, and the runner was off to the races! Now, it's a whole series of button combinations that totally distract from hitting. Argh! Too frustrating. The lack of control on the base paths, before and after the ball is put in play is very frustrating. I wish Sony would fix this issue because it's the only thing holding this game back from being perfect.
Oh, and as always, I'm going to lament the fact that you still have no control over arguing calls made by the umps. I loved in the MVP series when you could argue the call and it would pump up your team and the crowd. Bring it to this series, Sony, because it was a great little feature that made the game enjoyable.
Overall, this is a great baseball game and sim. If you like baseball, go and pick it up because it is as close to a perfect sports game as you're gonna get.
Plus, it looks totally awesome on 1080p HD. Wow. I hate the Yankees, but damn, the new stadium looks gorgeous. It literally glitters in the game. Impressive.
