This is truely the last greatest PS3 bundle because 1) it comes with MGS4 and 2) It's the last PS3 80GB being actively sold that's backwards compatible. Though i put PS2 behind me, there were many games that I still have not played yet on that console that i really didn't want to switch between game systems to do, so getting this last PS3 with backwards compatibility was greatly essential.
Pros:

Great game line up
Simple HDMI auto detect settings
Blue Ray .... nuff said
Able to Import your old PS2 game saves (need a memory card adapter but that part cost $12 bucks)
PS2 games are upscaled to 1080p making them look great
Playstation Home (when released will be totally unreal)
Bluetooth technology makes controls really responsive
Free Online play
Built in Wireless, no need to buy extra parts
Cons:
The Price (the inflamed prices not the real cost of this system)
Current gen no longer backwards compatible (not this one though)
Depending on how far away you play from your console the USB charge cable could be too short at times
The nice looking glossy finish looks good but it's a dust magnent
Doesn't allow more that one PSN master account and deleting a master account seems to be missing from the options
Doesnt come with mic to communicate with players when playing online
Playing this console has been a great experience. I also own a 360 Elite and i must say i pretty much enjoy playing on my PS3. One thing Xbox has over Sony is the online aspect. I think PS3 Home will change that, allowing players to be more social and interact on a much larger scale. This is a really great bundle to get. One thing I really do not agree with is the inflamed prices that this particular console is being sold for. When it was first released the bundle costed $500. Because this bundle is rare retailers are tacking on an additional $100 - $120 just for kicks and i think that's truley just done out of pure greed. If you cannot find a descent retailer setting this bundle for the "real" price, make getting it at this "adjusted" prices your last ditch desperate effort because the $120 bucks you'd be saving could be spent on games and accessories.

We purchased this bundle a few weeks back as an early family Christmas present. Even though the other systems on the market have a larger game catalog, over time I feel that this will be rectified by Sony. For our needs specifically, this was the best console for us for the following reasons.
1. Blu-ray player- we have a home theater system and the ps3 is a wonderful addition to it. The upconversion is great, and so far we haven't noticed any issues with dvd or blu-ray playback.
2. Graphics- We hooked this up to a Panasonic PT-AX100U LCD Projector and used a 106" 16x9 screen in conjunction with it. Compared to the Xbox 360, the graphics seemed sharper and more intense. The color saturation was pretty good as well. Personally, I found MGS 4's graphics and textures to be more realistic looking than a similar style game (Halo I believe) played on the Xbox 360.
3. Downwards Compatibility- This specific PS3 bundle still carries the emulator feature that allows the end user to still play all their old ps1 and most of their ps2 games. We had a ps2 at one point but it was accidentally broken by my youngest. Seeing as how Sony is moving away from all the hardware and emulator support of the older playstation games, I felt that this was our best choice / last chance to get something that would fit all of mine and my families' needs.
4. One super large Hard-drive - More room than you'll ever need to save all those games. We managed to create several "backup" cards in both ps1 and ps2 format for every member of our family (5 people) and my nephew. So far it hasn't made a noticeable dent into our HD space.
5. Online Play - Granted, not so much my realm of expertise as I have not yet gotten a chance to test this out. However, one very noticeable and nice feature is the fact that it is free. No subscriptions required.
6. Media Player - We've been able to play several different video file types with this system and have experienced no hiccups. However, I do not believe it can play Mkvs. Perhaps installing the Linux OS and adding a Codec pack would fix this. Then again, its probably best not to mess around with the OS unless you know what you are doing.
7. Wireless Controllers - There is now no way that people may accidentally yank the player or trip over cords when playing. We've gotten as far as 10-13feet away from the console (with it behind us) and have experienced no hesitation.
The only downside so far that I have been able to see is that there is no way to take any old memory cards from the original ps or ps2 and transfer them over to the ps3... There go hours of gameplay on several old rpgs

I was debating between this MGS4 bundle and the regular, newer 80GB model. Ended up buying this bundle for $450 from the Amazon Warehouse deal, it was an opened box item, but everything was new. The system surpassed my expectation, and I immediately got hooked to playing the PS2 Final Fantasy XII game on the system. The backward compatibility is awesome, this means that you can probably buy the cheaper PS2 game since they are still making most of the game for both PS2 and PS3, ie Madden 2009 + many other great titles. So unless you really want the graphics, or the PS3 signature series like MGS4 or FF XIII, you can save a few bucks here and there by going with the PS2 version of the game with this system.
As fas as the fan noise is concern, I do hear a little noise. But nothing out of normal. This is basically a desktop computer, so when everything is running, the fan is expected to make some noise. The energy usage for this system is supposedly more than the newer 80GB system, but it is expected as well since it has 2 extra USB ports, and the multimedia card reader. All these extra stuff use power. But then in the long run, its energy cost won't be that much more.
I have my PS3 set up to play on my 19" desktop monitor/TV, and it looked great with just one of those $10 basic HDMI cable sold on amazon. Unless you have a 40" or bigger TV, I don't think the quality of the HDMI cable will make a big difference. The picture, graphics are stunning, even on the PS2 games.
The 2 extra USB cable and the Multimedia card reader should be helpful, but I have not gotten to use those functions just yet, so really cannot comment on that. But I can imagine the extras can be useful if you have more than 2 controllers and especially if you are going to get the eye camera. Of course you can just get the USB expansion port, but just some what of a hassle.
Overall, I say this bundle is worth it if you can still find it for the right price. It normally sells for $499, but it got quickly snatched up by those 3rd party resellers who are trying to make money off others by selling it for $600+. I was extremely lucky to get one for $450 in earlier this month. But if you cannot find it anywhere, and the $600+ ones are the only ones left, then I'd say go for the newer 80GB system for $399, and just get the USB expansion port and maybe get an used PS2 system off ebay for less than $100 if you still want to play PS2 games. This way, you still save money comparing to shelling out $650 to buy from 3rd party vendor.

This system ROCKS. This does not even compare to my old PS2 system. I purchased this to replace my DVD player and PS2. It has far surpassed my expectations as a gaming, music and movie system.
Metal Gear Solid is just awesome. The graphics are just unbelievable, or should that be "to believable." The game play just drags you in and keeps you going. I love the fact that they stick with the same 3D generating with the movies. Not switching to some other rendering of the characters and environment. It keeps the flow of the game smoother.
The PS2 and PS game compatibility is the main reason I went for the 80GB. I did not want to have to keep my PS2 running just to continue playing its games. The wireless controller and virtual memory cards make it much nicer than the PS2 system. Then only draw back is having to get the memory card adapter to move saved games to the PS3.
The Blu-Ray player is sweet. I replaced a SD DVD player. The PS3 does a great job of upconverting DVDs. The bluetooth remote is a must have if you will be watching movies.
I networked it with my PC and have shared my music, movies, and pictures. Works great to listen to music and view pictures.
All said and done it is everything I wanted in one device.
