Video Game Reviews of Resistance 2

Customer Review: Intense gunplay at 20 stories high
Summary: 4 Stars

Funny how the gaming industry as turned more Hollywood by the year, not only by the storytelling in the games but strangely in its release schedules. Recently we had Fallout 3, an open world game where you can go wherever you want released the same day as Little Big Planet, a platformer where you can create anything you want. The next week? The sequel to Insomniac's Resistance: Fall of Man going head-to-head against the sequel to the Xbox 360's massive hit, Gears of War. It's like Deep Impact/Armageddon all over again. Now I played the first Resistance and I have to say, I didn't care for it. Seeing as how I only have a Playstation 3 it would seem proper to check this game out and while I do have some big gripes, the scale of this thing is massive and at times seems like a victim of its hype as well as problems of its own.

Story: Continuing where Fall of Man left off, Nathan Hale managed to escape Europe from the Chimeran threat that took over Europe and Asia at an incredibly fast pace. Infected by the virus within the creatures, Hale is part of a rare group of people dubbed "Sentinels" who are able to at least reasonably keep the virus at bay with their own body as well as medical inhibitors. But seems the Chimera have a loftier goal: America, and Hale and other soldiers have to fight the threat before it takes over everything.

Graphics: The first Resistance was seen as one of the more fluid games without nary a drop in framerate though it wasn't really seen as a visually impressive game or a spectacular setpiece-laden one. Resistance 2 by comparison is gigantic in scale and more than once I thought "holy ****" at either the size of some of the enemies or the first time I saw the San Francisco skyline practically blanketed with Chimeran ships (probably one of the coolest moments in gaming I saw this year, along with the bear sequence in Condemned 2). However, I do have gripes in that the super-sharp detail is kind of lacking and the big thing is the lighting. You thought the flashlight in Silent Hill: Homecoming was a little ineffective? Try this one out. Might as well just walk blind. But the game's hugeness for lack of a better word gets rid of the detail nags so it's okay.

Sound/Music: Since I have crappy speakers and of course family members always want you to "turn it down", I decided to get headphones and I have to tell you, the sound rocks on this thing. From the explosions and gunfire to ships whizzing by overhead, it's an intense fight that'll make one recall the big moments from Call of Duty IV. The voice acting is adequate and gets the job done and at least we have a more vocal main character than say, the popular mute Gordon Freeman.

Gameplay: Here's where I run into problems. Not in terms of the controls themselves (though the Crouch and Run are mapped to the same button which makes it difficult to run from encounters when all of a sudden you're walking around with your knees bent) but in terms of the enemies. Unlike the first one, the health is a bit more forgiving and you don't really need to hunt for medpacks all the time but rather have your health regenerate but enemies are smarter and know it and at times they get lots of cheap hits or you're thrust into a massive battle where it almost seems unfair. One encounter I ran into has count em, 3 big buggers easily the size of a King Kong and I have to kill these things. Did I mention they have rocket launcher-type weapons and the whole area is surrounded by exploding cars that kill you should they explode? Yeah, talk about cheap.

Then there's probably 2 of the worst enemies within the game and that is the chameleon's who have near-invisibility appearances and a one-hit-kill. Never mind the fact that sometimes it's hard to see them but they appear incredibly close to you and if you don't act quickly then it's a trip to the death screen. Then there's what I can describe as skinny zombies which run at you and try to maul you to death. Doesn't seem bad does it? Well try to take on at least 20 at a given time and while they appear in moments where you're not alone, they're still aggravating to take down simply due to the sheer size and more than once I got caught within the stage since I was trying to maneuver around the things.

However, this game actually made me want to keep playing and see what epicness Insomniac had in store for me whereas in the first one I sort of lost interest in the same-y firefights. Maybe the immersion is much better or the fact that your squad members took a page from Modern Warfare and are actually useful in battle (unlike Resistance's bullet magnets who died within a few minutes of you saying "finally, some help") but for every moment the game through an encounter at me that annoyed the you-know-what out of me, there were other moments where I thought "yeah but I'm having a blast so I don't care that much".

For those of you familiar with Insomniac will know of their work on the excellent Ratchet and Clank series and their inventiveness when it comes down to weaponry. A lot of the weapons in this game are fairly standard: the shotgun, the assault rifle, the sniper rifle etc but it's the secondary functions where it generates the fun. For example, your Magnum actually has exploding shells so let's say you fire a shell into a dude and kill him. Waste of ammo? No, just press R2 and detonate like a mine and wipe out surrounding enemies. Favorites like the Carbine/Grenade Launcher and the Bullseye/Homing Beacon are here as well as some new ones. Unlike Call of Duty IV where I had specific weaponry I preferred, Resistance 2's options had a bit more fun though sometimes their appearance in a stage was a bit too scripted.

As far as multiplayer is concerned well the first one had excellent multiplayer and this one just ups it even more with modes up to 60 (!!) players and a co-op mode (which isn't the same as the regular Campaign but a different one) and it's easy to see Resistance 2 more than eating up your time. It's not quite a buy for me but I'll put it this way: if I had an extra 70$ laying around or got this as a gift, I wouldn't complain one bit...I'd just curse the enemies to death before I blew their head off with my shotgun.

Resistance 2 takes up right where Resistance: Fall of Man left off. Hale is kidnapped by a black ops group in London and forced to Iceland for research testing. The full scope of what happens in Iceland is a mystery, but the game reveals that as Hale wrestles with the insidious Chimera war machine, he must also battle the virus raging inside his body that threatens to transform him into the very creature he fights against.

The Return of the Chimera
The Chimera are the main enemies of the Resistance franchise. For those new to the story, it is believed that the Chimera are of extraterrestrial origin. Yet, it is known that their army expands by infecting humans with a virus that transforms humans into Chimera while inside a cocoon. These creatures are much stronger than humans, and they usually have multiple yellow eyes. They have remarkable healing abilities and thrive in very cold temperatures, which has led them to alter the Earth's climate to a much lower temperature that better suits their habitat requirements.

Resistance 2 introduces several new Chimeran enemies with a host of new powers. A few new characters include the Chameleon, a creature that can cloak itself completely and kill a player in one, destructive blow, and the Grim, which are a terrifying species that attack in hordes.

The Battle Moves to the United States
After the brief opening scenes in London and then Iceland, game play jumps ahead two years and across the globe to San Francisco. Giant, mile-long motherships slowly cruise through the skies, demolishing the city with fiery beams. The city is burned and mangled, and it appears that there will be little to no survivors. As the battle continues across the United States, you're sure to encounter many new, deranged, and much more powerful enemies.

In Chicago, you'll be joined by a squad of soldiers, all carrying different weapons. To survive and move through the level, you'll need to work together, moving from cover to cover, setting up your squad in a smart and defensive manner. These are just a few examples of the challenging levels you'll encounter as you battle your way across the country to save humankind. And if you're hoping for new weapons, Resistance 2 won't leave you disappointed. The US-based campaign is loaded with tons of new weapons to enhance the overall game play and first-person shooter experience.

Online game play Goes BIG
Powered by Insomniac Games' third-generation PlayStation 3 technology, Resistance 2 delivers several console gaming breakthroughs. Most impressive are the stand-alone, class-based, online co-operative campaign mode that can accommodate up to eight players, and the mind-blowing, 60-player, squad-based online competitive multiplayer battle fest. This unprecedented 60-player option could revolutionize online multiplayer game play and is sure to provide countless hours of action-packed fun.

Resistance 2, set in the United States, is loaded with new weapons, enemies, and an unprecedented online gaming experience.
