Video Game Reviews of Red Faction GuerrillaCustomer Review: Thankfully you can try the demo before you buy this. Summary: 5 Stars
Hey Amazon: Where's my golden sledge hammer for pre-ordering? I need it bad. I found the answer online. Type HARDHITTER in the game options cheats section and you get the gold hammer for multiplayer use.
I've downloaded probably 100 demos this year since I'm tired of buying games based upon hype or reviewers (other than me). That said; download Wheelman for some good laughs...
OK, back to Red Faction. The "Red" in Red faction refers to Mars not Russia. The plot is very similar to Total Recall meets Demolition Man in many ways. Your player is a miner who collects salvage for money. The planet is controlled by a group called the EDF who are running Mars like a dictatorship. Your goal is to destroy EDF equipment, kill their soldiers in order to get scrap and raise overall morale. If you die too much or too many workers get killed morale drops and that's not good. As morale goes up, the workers join you while fighting and there are better drops and more ammo re-supply trunks.
There's a mix between missions and just cruising around until you find something to blow up. The missions start easy but get progressivley more difficult as you liberate more sectors. There are five sectors in total and it take a few key missions to liberate each one. The enemy combatants (ECs) aren't too smart (like they are in COD). If you start getting pounded, running away or hiding works almost every time -- especially if you hide in a crate. In other words, the ECs don't pursue you.
OK, I didn't read the manual (RTFM) so I didn't get the World Map until I was on like the second or third sector. You press the Select button and highlight your destination and the game plots a course for you. This is a very cool feature. Keep in mind that there's a lot of loopbacks and you can almost always find quicker routes by driving over a mountain or off of bridges. Remember that it's Mars gravity so damage it greatly reduceds from Earth-normal gravity.
Did I mention that there's a lot of driving? Well there is. If you're not on a mission, just use the world map to locate missions or high-value enemy targets. If morale is high enough, you usually get some help; however, the help is just about useless since they rarely kill the ECs. The best approach is -- strangely enough -- to take on large groups of ECs with your sledge hammer.
As always, ammo conservation is key. My approach is to waste a few ECs and resupply from their drops. Once you run out of explosives, it's time to head to a safe house or locker to resupply. Otherwise, you're just in a constant fire-fight and you're not collecting scrap.
Once you have enough scrap dollars, you can increase the number of explosives you can carry and plant and buy better weapons.
The controls are similar to COD but there are no grenades. Instead, R2 is a clunky weapon select that's kind-of slow because you have to hold R2 and the make a weapon selection. Unlike COD, running out of ammo doesn't automatically cycle up the next weapon -- bummer. Speaking of weapons, there's a whole bunch of weapons that are totally useless and a complete waste of money. I settled in on a Nano Rifle, a Rocket Laucher and the Rail Driver (which is a drop and my Personal favorite) plus my sledge hammer. The Rail Driver is dropped by the white ECs and has a thermal imaging scope that can see and shoot through walls. Towards the end of the game there's a Thermobaric Rifle that shoots something like a small atomic bomb. There's two problems: first, if you shoot something close, you kill yourself; and, secondly it's introduced so late in the game you don't really get to use it.
I completed the game in about 24 hours. The final mission was really fun. You start out in a modified tank and they throw everything they have at you. I mean it's like hundreds of LAVs, Tanks, foot moguls, trucks and more. There's no way to survive in the tank so I just got out and ran the whole way. Imagine running through a group of 50 soldiers 4 tanks and 10 LAVs and not taking much, if any, damage. I enjoyed this the most.
The graphics are very good and there's no shortage of terrain or missions. For the most part it's an open-world game. My only minor complaint is that you see distant objects rendering themselves during play. The amount of destruction you can cause is nothing short of amazing. All things considered, I like this game and will spend many hours playing it.
Once you complete the game, it resets and the difficulty level increases significantly. I recommend that you create a few saved games immediately before and after you complete the game so you can come back and play with all the missions unlocked. This games must have taken forever to write. It's worth every penny. (And I think most PS3 games stink -- especially anything from Ubisoft or Unreal.)
Online play is pretty good but not great. First of all you have to find a game which isn't that easy since there are minimum number of player requirements. They did manage to incorporate some of the wrecking theme into some of the games -- which is good. I'm not sure how the leveling-up works and if it has any effect on your character other than the sledge hammer you can hold.

A group of rebels calling themselves the Red Faction had overthrown the ruthless Ultor Corporation after years of oppression. The EDF responded by launching a fleet of warships to Mars to aid the miners, bring Ultor to justice and restore order to the Martian colonies. In order to ensure safety and security for the newly liberated colonists, the EDF set up command posts and bases across the planet. Initially, under the EDF's rule, the people of Mars prospered: colonists established homesteads, built towns and independent mining operations and began to stake and work their mining claims. But the more things change on Mars, the more they stay the same. The troubles began with colonists being driven from their homes and mining claims by greedy, Earth-based corporations. Then came a 50 year turn of events that saw the EDF adopting the heavy-handed tactics that it once stood against. Yet in doing so it also instilled a deep-seated resentment among the miners and settlers of the Martian colonies. One of these new Martians is miner Alec Mason, whose dream of a new life carved out of the course Martian soil was crushed in the face of EDF-ordered curfews, detention centers, beatings, mass arrests and personal tragedy. But as powerful as the EDF is, there is resistance. Mason and a small group of revolutionaries have banded together, taken up the Red Faction name and pledged to again bring about a free Mars. And though their enemy has changed, their battle cry remains unchanged: "Better Red than Dead." Guerilla Warfare You don't stand a chance against the EDF using standard military tactics. The only recourse when the few stand against the many is the use of hit and run tactics. Learn the routes of the patrols and quickest ways in and out of EDF strongholds. By studying these things you can instinctively know when to attack, and when to wait for a better opportunity. Ambushes are also useful in thinning EDF ranks. Remote charges and proximity mines are your best friend when preparing an ambush. A few well-placed charges on the structural supports of a bridge can do wonders for stopping a convoy dead in its tracks. Above all else, remember this: guerilla tactics are not about fighting fair, they are about winning. |
