Video Game Reviews of Ear Force PX5 Programmable Wireless 7.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound Headset with Bluetooth

Customer Review: Amazing pair of headsets!! Has software bugs but overall awesome!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Hello this is Eli here to give my review of the Turtle Beach PX5 wireless headset. This headset claims to do it all. Dual blue tooth, wireless audio, unlimited sound editing, you name it it says it has it. But the big question is does it all work? And how easy does it all work? Well for starters as you can see it has a completly new design compared to the older Turtle Beach flagship model the X41. Sporting larger more cushy ear muffs than the X41 it is a welcome improvement in comfort for long gaming sessions. The headband also is more soft adding to the comfort level. The mic is still using the same design from the X41 so no inprovement there. Being all blacked out it looks really slick, just wish turtle beach went with a black mic cable for the xbox instead of left over X41 cable stock. But that isnt a game killer just minor cosmetic issue.

The wireless reciever is exactly the same as the X41 just in black. Has both opitical and rca hook ups. Wish Turtle Beach would have added dual opitical inputs so you can add both PS3 and XBOX 360 but that didnt happen. So either you have to get a optical splitter, unplug and replug each time you switch systems. Or you can just go through the tv which I find kinda a pain, lots of adjusting options to get perfect sound that route. Plus I beleave going straight from audio source to your output source like headsets or surround sound is always a better audio choice for quality. The reciever has a frount audio input case a buddy comes over you can let him into your dolby expierience. Which if you havent had the pleasure to enjoy yet I strongly recomend this. I dont know exactly how turtle beach has done away with the hissing issue from the X41 but they have pulled it off!! You can hardly hear any hiss its soooo minor you almost have to listen close for it intentionaly. It makes the wireless expierience amazing. I can get pretty far away from the reciever with no issues but yes it will eventually cut out, but the distance u can get I think will surprise you.

Now for the big issue, sound quality. Ok Im going to try and cut Turtle Beach some slack here. The stock preset setting are amazing!! I think most users will just be happy with the stock presets. I personally love the treble plus bass boost. On Call of Duty Black Ops you will hear things you never even knew were there. Picking off enemies is much easier using the dolby surround sound, can practicly know when there shooting from, footsteps become precise to where there coming from to. This will put a huge advantage for you for online gaming. The bass is excellent but does get distorted at higher volume levels but it has to be crazy loud so it isnt surprising. It does get extremely loud compaired to the X41 seems like at least twice as loud. With the X41 I would run the volume just under full blast and was just about right for me. With the PX5 half volume and even under is crazy loud. I tend to forget that I have a ways to go to get full volume so for fun I will crank it for a bit to see where all my $250 went. Trust me it wont disappoint. Now for the bad. Turtle beach is really pushing these as fully custonizable headsets, but well it has a lot of bugs. For starters right when I got these headsets I downloaded and installed the voice morphing, creepy voice and chipmonk to be exact to all my presets. Not knowing this will destroy your gaming sound! It makes it sound like both speakers are blown. I contacted turtle beach thinking my new $250 speakers were blown, only to have turtle beach want me to pay to ship back to them, after I literally just paid turtle beach $35 to get the headsets to me the previous day. So I decided to check into the issue myself. I tried switching sound presets, turning game volume down, with no luck on a whim I just restored my factory presets. And was back in buessness. So I think turtle beach is on the right track with adjustable sound settings but being this is one of the first headsets ever for gaming to have this option I would give them some time to work the bugs out. Another downfall to the sound is I noticed Gran Turismo does not work with these headsets. Also the blu ray despicable me doesnt work either. I checked all the settings and everything is correct but you wont get any sound. Hopefully this will be fixed in a update soon looking foward to Gran Turismo with these should be amazing.

Another big selling point is dual blue tooth. Ok I kinda thought I would never really use this aside for PS3 chat didnt see the pont of hooking up my phone also. Well Ill admit I had to try it just to see how it worked. Pairing is quite easy with the phone and for PS3. After I had the phone paired I fired up the PS3 and got NHL 11 going. I turned down all the music for the game and just left on commentary and sound effects. After that I turned on pandora on my phone. It worked flawless. I could turn down the phone volume seperate from the game volume. One plus is the bluetooth volume in a up down bar style adjuster, the game volume is the old style dial. So it makes it easy to find both and know what your turning up or down. This makes learning the headset while you are wearing it perfect. I did find the bluetooth button to be fairly small, you use this to answere your phone while using the headset. It will beep at you when you are recieving a call or text message. I gotta admit this is amazing. With my X41 I would get a call not hear it wife would be yelling at me waving my phone in my face, would have to stop playing, answere the phone and either a walk away from game if it was a serious call like the boss or something, or b try and keep playing while on phone and watch my lack of concentration get me killed left and right. Not anymore with the PX5 I heard it beep taped the button my game chat cuts out my phone chat turns on I can talk and play with ease. This I think was the coolest feature of all on this headset.

Okay so now for the biggest kicker of this headset, the price. It retails for $250 thats a lot of money for some headsets. Is it worth it? Yes and no. Really depends on how into gaming you are. This headset will make you love your games even more, will also make you want to try new games just to expierience the sound quality. It has a lot going for it and I think and hope turtle beach backs this headset with lots of sound setting options, and they are soppose to be working with game developers to make specificate sound setting for the game your using. This could be a major game changer for the headset industry. But as of right now there isnt anything worth downloading for this headset. Good part though this can improve over time. With more people using this option it can add lots of sound settings that can make this headset the best ever. I would just stick with the stock presets for now and see what turtle beach does in the future. But for $250 dollars you are getting a lot of bang for your buck. Being wireless that works perfect is huge, turtle beach even has a blue tooth adapter for your controller in the works. This would mean you would have no wires at all between you and your console. For me I have a dog plus friends with kids and having wires all around is a potental disaster. Dont want my xbox or ps3 crashing to the ground tangled in a dogs legs or kids legs or hands.

If your kinda on the fence or have a smaller budget there are other options. Lots of X41 are coming up for sale used for around $100. This is a great headset that is simular in sound than the PX5 just not as loud or clear sounding when game sound is silent. But not a major issue. I know there are wired headsets for around $100 to $150 with equal sound quality of the PX5 but then again you have wires all around, fine if your single no kids or pets for the rest of us it isnt a good option. But none will offer the blue tooth which is amazing once you have it you wont ever want another headset without it.

I think turtle beach could have a hit on their hands but it is going to take lots of backing on their part to really open up the potental of this headset. The hardware needs some work, but it just came out so it will have flaws. I think if your pick these up now you will be happy and just give turtle beach time to do their part and it will turn out great. For $250 dollars it will give you every penny worth and more.

One a finale note Turtle Beach is a great company but their customer support is lacking. They only do support through email. This can become very unhelpfull quickly when you keep getting suggestions you already tried. Can make for a very long and fustrating expierence. So buying from a major store Best Buy, Game Stop etc would be the way to go. If it isnt working bring it back no questions, no shipping charges. This headset is pretty confusing at first but makes sense as time and trial and error goes on. So be aware if you are not computer savy you can forget about using the sound editor as it is a pain to use. Also there are a lot of buttons on this so there is a learning curve that takes some time to get used to what is what and where while the head set is on. Keep the handy preset sound settings list by you so you know what your using, trust me you will get confused what setting your on since it only says a number of what preset your in.

All in all this is a amazing headset, just has bugs to work out. Good part is it is things turtle beach can fix even after it is in the customers hands. Least just hope gamers dreams come true and they stand behind the PX5 and change the way headsets are used forever. You have to try these to beleave. C'mon playing slipknot on pandora while pawning noobs on COD Black Ops it doesnt get any better then that!!
